Coping With The Holiday Blues
As the holiday season is over, do not be surprised if the holiday blues sneaks upon you and gets you down for the first day at work – even if you love your job and live for it. It is actually quite normal occurrence and we’ve all been there…well, some of us still are.
Going back to the everyday life after quality family time, getting up without the alarm clock, feeling free and doing things at your own accord can be difficult; some even get so deeply affected that they feel depressed. No wonder you hear about the after holiday depression every so often. Which is why we have the following tips prepared for you - fight the holiday blues easily.
Don’t make the day before work a working day.
Many people begin their first after-the-vacation-day one day earlier so as to “warm up” and get back into saddle. But, why would you shorten your free time?
Work will still be there the day after.
Use the last day of vacation enjoying and not thinking about obligations to come tomorrow. This is the day to set your alarm clock early, but only to have a cup of coffee enjoying silence and planning fun activities for your last day of vacation.
Lift up your spirits by going through pictures and souvenirs.
Although it seems logical that it is better to forget the fun time and just concentrate on the job, it is absolutely the opposite. You have been traveling and escaping from work to recharge your batteries. Re-live the relaxing, fun and beautiful moments, look at the pictures and you will feel like you're still there. Make it your battery charger until the next holiday.
Take same time to tell your colleges about the vacation.
Okay, finally the first day at work. Do not immediately head to your office even if that looks wise because the blues and depression hit when you change from relaxing to fight-or-flight mode. Sit down for a minute with colleagues and share the impressions from holidays. Talking to colleagues and listening to their fun time is the best warm up for the working season.
Task itinerary: start with reading (deleting) e-mails.
Days without opening the e-mail account lights the alert button and causes panic to most people. Approach the problem casually, have the first day planned only for emails and catching up on what you have missed. Start with deleting messages and not with searching for important ones and act as if you have all the time in the world only for this.
Plan your event planning (planning is work too).
Classification of tasks is the step number two to take. Don’t get down to business or call clients, instead, just prioritize and strategize you further activities. This is a great way to gain control over errands and to feel in control.
Take a break, go and have lunch.
People often think that they do not deserve a break the first day after a vacation because they were procrastinating for some time. Of course, it is not right to feel guilt.
Taking a break is a part of the working day for a reason and even after a vacation.
If you start overrunning your engine immediately, you are likely to burn out soon.
Call a catch up meeting.
After you've filled yourself in on what has to be done, it is time for the first meeting. This should be a sort of informal meeting session where you all reconnect and refresh on your relations and business obligations. If it was a collective vacation, you’ll all feel the same so take it slow. This is an important job which counts as a warm-up for serious action.
Go home, have a glass of wine and get some sleep
Next important step at the end of the first post vacation working day is believing you were productive. It does not always seem like it, nevertheless if you cover the tips we listed above rest assure you have done a lot of good to yourself and your business.
Not staying longer at work the first day counts as another success.
Sit down with your family, friends or by yourself, watch a good movie, drink a glass of wine and go to sleep feeling prepared for the next day.
All in all, gradually coming back to your obligations and tasks is what should do the trick. Maybe you are an expert already, and then again maybe it suits you to go back to regular working life quickly and without any preparation. Whatever the case is, feel free to share your secret with us.
